Architecture is increasingly understood to be a sensual, spatial experience, which means that the experience of buildings and spatial constellations is also a perception of atmospheres that are rated as positive or negative. Architects, planners, investors, and politicians must produce effects such as these according to intersubjective and communicable criteria, and not intuitively or randomly.Architectural Atmospheres addresses the growing awareness of the atmospheric dimension of architecture and provides a current, programmatic discussion of this topic. What possibilities does this approach open to architecture, what value does this knowledge have? Three essays and a conversation lead a cross-discipline discussion on the impact of architecture, and contribute to the debate first initiated by Peter Zumthor. An architect like his father before him, Joseph Gwilt (1784-1863) is best remembered for his published work. His most celebrated achievement, reissued here in its first edition of 1842, was this hugely popular resource, which went through several further editions. The work draws extensively on French sources, although its success owes much to its accessibility and organisation into three thorough sections. The first looks at the development of architecture, using examples from various countries and regions, with a particular focus on Britain. Architectural theory is then explored with reference to construction, building materials and detailed illustrations. Lastly, Gwilt turns to praxis, looking at rules and styles of architecture and how these have been implemented in public and private buildings. Over 1,000 wood engravings, based on drawings by the author's son, accompany the text. The Architecture of Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (1826), Gwilt's English translation, is also reissued in this series.

This volume explores the mathematical character of architectural practice in diverse pre- and early modern contexts. It takes an explicitly interdisciplinary approach, which unites scholarship in early modern architecture with recent work in the history of science, in particular, on the role of practice in the scientific revolution. As a contribution to architectural history, the volume contextualizes design and construction in terms of contemporary mathematical knowledge, attendant forms of mathematical practice, and relevant social distinctions between the mathematical professions. As a contribution to the history of science, the volume presents a series of micro-historical studies that highlight issues of process, materiality, and knowledge production in specific, situated, practical contexts. Our approach sees the designer’s studio, the stone-yard, the drawing floor, and construction site not merely as places where the architectural object takes shape, but where mathematical knowledge itself is deployed, exchanged, and amplified among various participants in the building process.

Comprehensive overview on the work of renowned London architect Tony Fretton (born 1945).After graduating from the reputable Architectural Association in 1982 Fretton opened his own architect's office. He attracted attention early on with the Lisson Gallery and the "Red House" (London). His spatial creations and their incorporation into the urban context are of subtle mastery. With his designs for the Camden Arts Centre, the Fuglsang Kunstmuseum in Denmark, London townhouse for the artist Anish Kapoor and the British embassy in Warsaw, Fretton has emerged as one of the most prominent contemporary architects.

Bruther est une agence basée à Paris, fondée par Stéphanie Bru et Alexandre Theriot, investissant les champs de l'architecture, de la recherche, de l'enseignement, de l'urbanisme et du paysage. Depuis 2007, Bruther développe à l'échelle nationale et internationale, des projets tels que la maison Light House (2008), le Musée d'art visuel de Maribor (2010), Helsinki Central Library (2012) et la MIR (2013). Le livre "Introduction" présente différents documents iconographiques produits et collectés par l'agence depuis sa création. Il est le point de départ de futures publications.
